Virtual Remittance Gateway

Virtual Remittance Gateway (VRG) is a pioneering mobile financial services platform dedicated to serving the underserved and underbanked segments of Pakistan. Since its inception, VRG has been at the forefront of advancing financial inclusion in line with the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS). VRG worked closely with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) during the formulation of NFIS, and later with both SBP and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for the successful design and implementation of the Asaan Mobile Account (AMA) Framework. This framework, introduced in 2018 under a joint SBP-World Bank initiative, set the foundation for a many-to-many interoperable ecosystem, enabling banks and telecom operators to provide simplified access to financial services nationwide. In 2018, VRG became the first entity in Pakistan to be granted the Third Party Service Provider (TPSP) license by SBP and PTA. Through its aggregation of all telecom operators with the AMA platform, VRG provided local banks with unparalleled reach, allowing millions in remote and far-flung areas to access branchless banking and digital financial services. Most recently, VRG achieved the commercial launch of Agent Interoperability under its PSO/PSP license. This milestone is set to bring significant reforms by enabling seamless interoperability among branchless banking agents, transforming the current ecosystem into a truly many-to-many model. This reform not only strengthens transparency and operational efficiency but also amplifies outreach, making financial services more accessible and inclusive for Pakistan’s unbanked population.
